Motorcycle Instructor Course
Due to the high quality of training and friendly atmosphere Shires is becoming extremely popular,
with this is mind we are continually expanding and looking for new instructors.
We are looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals to join our team of full and part-time instructors.

You need to have held a full motorcycle license for at least three years and be over 21.

The Motorcycle Instructor Course leads to being qualified as a Down Trained Shires CBT Instructor.

  1. Full time course (not available at this time)
  2. Part Time Course
The part time course runs one day a week and will take around ten weeks to complete due to its 'on-the-job
training' nature. We can only train one or two people at a time on the part time course so it may take you some time to become qualified.

A Down Trained CBT instructor is a DSA Approved Motorcycle Instructor and is the necessary first step on the road to becoming a fully qualified Motorcycle Instructor able to teach students who are preparing for the DSA Practical Test on a large motorcycle.

After successfully completing the course you will be able to:

  1. Fully understand the CBT syllabus and the level of competence a trainee needs to show to complete the various elements to a safe and satisfactory standard.
  2. Produce instructor notes and lesson plans.
  3. Deliver a CBT course to a satisfactory standard under the supervision of a Cardington assessed instructor.
As a qualified CBT instructor, you may be offered work on a part time basis for which you will be paid.
The amount of hours depends on the amount of courses we have running during the summer, which can be on average 15 a week.

The average CBT takes 8 hours.

We require our instructors to work at least 12 hours a month to maintain our high standards.

This means that you would have to commit to working at least one and a half days per month.
You will need to obtain a copy of the DSA's 'The Motorcycling Manual - Driving Skills'.

Please read this and the latest copy of the 'Highway Code' carefully, as it will help you throughout your course.

There is a fee of £595 for the part time course.

These prices include a Shires helmet, instructor radios, training materials and instructor's waistcoat.

Once you are confident and we feel you are ready, we will send you to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) assessment centre at Cardington to gain your CBT 1 licence.
On successful completion you can then apply to become a Direct Access Scheme (DAS) instructor,
which means that you will hold a qualification to teach trainees on bikes of over 46.6bhp.
It also means that when a full time position arises with us you are now eligible to apply should you so wish.
