CBT Compulsory Basic Training
Element 'C' On site Riding

Now this is where the fun starts,
The bikes are taken to the car park area where there is a large section coned off with
Green cones. It is important that you keep the bike inside this conned off area at all times
You will have one instructor per four trainees, and there are normally other trainees at the same level as you, some may have ridden a bike before, but this can be beneficial as it will give you something to copy.

At the start each trainee is given the chance to demonstrate that they are able to start the engine on their bike.
This must be done safely, sitting on the bike, turn the ignition to the on position
Check the choke is on (CG125)
Check the bike is in Neutral, (Green neutral light on the dial or rock bike backwards and forwards)
Press the start button while twisting the throttle gently.
Keep the engine running constant until warm, but don't keep blipping the throttle
Then you need to stop the bike using the ignition key, and return it onto it's stand.

Each trainee will then have the chance to try and move the bike using the clutch & throttle. You will have to master the biting point of the clutch.

You will be helped through this part individually by the instructor until you feel confident to do it yourself, don't feel pressured by other trainees, Shires instructors recognize that everybody has different learning curves
You will then practice stopping the bike using the rear brake only (Right foot), then both brakes together
The instructor will let you ride round in circles and practice this until you are confident and stable.

So at this point hopefully you will be moving the motorcycle on your own.
You will be :- moving off, changing gear, slowing to a stop using both front and rear brakes to stop at a specific place between two cones.

Remember everyone has there own pace, This is basic training not a test.

Once the instructor is happy that you have the control of the motorcycle you will have to perform a few set manoeuvrers to show you can control the bike in different situations.

  • Riding through cones like a slalom at slow speed.
  • Riding in a figure of eight.
  • Performing a U turn.
  • Stopping as in an emergency
  • Turning left and right at a simulated junction
Your Shires instructor, and you have to be satisfied that you have shown a full understanding of all the elements of control and that you are confident enough to go out onto the road. If your instructor feels that you need more practice on the car park, he / she will arrange for you to return for another session.

If you feel you are not ready for the road section please do not hesitate to tell your instructor

All trainees completing element "C" (Off Road Riding) will be returned to the cabin for dinner break after which we will start element "D".
