CBT Compulsory Basic Training
Element 'A' the introduction

Clothing

Motorcycle clothing is designed to protect its wearer from impact, abrasion and the weather; it's important to buy the very best protection you can afford. (This need not be new)

For a training course at Shires you can hire helmet, gloves. jacket, water-proof legings and boots.

Jackets, Boots and gloves

Again, make sure you take the time to choose clothing which meets your requirements. Good motorcycle clothing is not cheap and reputable dealerships will always take the time to make sure that the clothing you buy is suitable for the type of riding you do and fits you properly.

Protective clothing falls into two basic categories:

  1. Leather
  2. Cordura
Both have advantages and disadvantages. It's likely that if you asked 10 motorcycle riders what the best protective clothing is that you would get 10 quite different answers. Choose clothing that is comfortable will give you protection from impact, abrasion and the weather. If clothing is designed to give you impact and abrasion protection it will have the CE mark. Consider purchasing separate body armour if it does not carry the CE mark. Leather clothing will probably carry a "Genuine Leather" or "Cowhide" label sewn into it somewhere.
One piece suits One piece suits have the advantage of covering your body without any joins at the waist. this reduces the risk from abrasion in the event of an accident.
There is also the advantage that there is less openings for the weather to find it's way in.

Jackets Seperate Jackets are also available in Leather and Cordura, but other makes are available. Leather is usually worn as the main clothing, where Cordura is usually worn over the top of you main clothing, so if you need to ride you bike to work cordura could be more suitable if there are no changing facilities at your place of work.
Seperates also give the option to buy at different times when budget allows, and maybe different colours. maybe to match the colour of your bike etc..

Boots Motorcycle Boots are not generally cheap and reputable dealerships will always take the time to make sure that the boots you buy are suitable for the type of riding you do and fit you properly. Choose boots that are comfortable and which are suitable for the kind of riding you will do. Make sure they're waterproof if you're going to be riding to work every day.

Gloves

Sturdy gloves that provide good abrasion protection are the sensible minimum requirement.
There are many, many gloves available.

Summery

As mentioned there are many different types of clothing, gloves and boots to choose from, the thing to remember here is that they do not need to be new, car boot sales, ebay, etc are a good place to look for clothing, and some good deals are there to be had
