Compulsory Basic Training
The Basics
|
|
|
This, now compulsory, course was Introduced in December 1990 to ensure that all learner
riders achieve a minimum safe and competent level of riding before being allowed to
continue learning on the roads unaccompanied.
Since the CBT was introduced the level of accidents, serious injuries and even deaths
have been significantly reduced by 40% and continues to make our roads safer today.

So what does the CBT entail
|
|
|
The CBT takes on average about 8 hours to complete, keep in mind that the CBT itself is not a test;
however you will be continually assessed throughout the day to ensure that you are taking in the
information that is being taught.. CBT Prices can be found here

A typical day's CBT at Shires
|
|
|
|
|
When you arrive at the Shires cabin just make yourself known to one of the friendly members
of staff and they will help you sign in and ensure you have all the right documents
(both parts of the photo card driving licence) and kit for the day ahead.
We want you to relax and enjoy your day with us so once you've signed in there's plenty of
tea and coffee to drink and other trainees to speak to.

The CBT syllabus is split into five sections, an understanding of each section must be shown
by all trainees before continuing to the next, we must see you are listening / learning

If you show a good level of understanding, and you are able to control the bike both
in the car park, and on the road, to a level of safety where we feel that you are able to
ride the bike unaccompanied without causing a danger to yourself and or other road users
you will be issued with a DL196 (CBT Certificate).
Once issued your certificate is valid for two years from that date, if you do not pass a full
motorcycle test before that time you will need to retake the course to remain legal on the road.
.
The following rules also apply
- You must not carry a pillion
- You must not tow any sort of trailer
- You are not allowed to ride on a motorway
- o You must still display full size 'L' plates front and rear of your bike at all times
Your CBT certificate validates your provisional entitlement on your driving licence to ride, keep it
safe as you may be asked to produce it along with your licence should you be stopped by the authorities..
Your CBT is also a prerequisite for training towards a test so you will need to produce each time you come for a training session
