Compulsory Basic Training
The Basics
Introduced in December 1990 to ensure that all learner riders achieved a minimum safe and competent level of riding before being allowed to ride on a road unaccompanied.

Also to reduce the level of serious injuries, and deaths, involving young and inexperienced riders.
The CBT successfully reduced serious injuries and deaths from the first year it was made compulsory (1997) - by a little over 40%   Thats a huge reduction

So what does the CBT entail
The CBT takes on average about 8 hours to complete, you must keep in mind that the CBT itself is not a test, it is basic training, not everyone completes the training in one day. This does not mean you failed, it just means you need more time to complete the training. CBT Prices can be found here
A typical day's CBT at Shires
Firstly, make your way to Shires, enter the cabin and introduce yourself to either, one of the instructors, or the office staff, or just wait outside and somebody will greet you. Just tell us you are there for a CBT.

Please relax, there are always more trainees to talk to and the instructors don't bite

Once inside help yourself to Tea/Coffee, and take a seat, at this point you will be asked to sign a declaration form and your Driving Licence will be checked.
  1. If you have a photo type licence you need to bring both parts
  2. If you have a old paper style licence, you need to bring a valid passport
The CBT syllabus is split into five sections, an understanding of each section must be shown by all trainees before continuing to the next, we must see you are listening / learning

The following is a brief summery of the five sections

  1. Introduction to the CBT (A talk on safety equipment and clothing)
  2.   Details
  3. Practical on site training (learning bike controls and general maintenance)
  4.   Details
  5. Practical on site riding (Learning to ride the bike off road)
  6.   Details
  7. A talk on practical on road riding (Highway code etc..)
  8.   Details
  9. Practical on road riding (On the road training)
  10.   Details
If you show a good level of understanding, and you are able to control the bike both in the car park, and on the road, to a level of safety where we feel that you are able to ride the bike unaccompanied without causing a danger to yourself and or other road users you will be issued with a DL196 (CBT Certificate).

Once issued your certificate is valid for two years from that date, if you do not pass
one of the full motorcycle test before that time you would have to retake the course.

The following rules also apply
  • You must not carry a pillion
  • You must not tow any sort of trailer
  • You are not allowed to ride on a motorway
  • You must still display 'L' plates front and rear
Your CBT certificate validates your provisional entitlement to ride, keep it safe as you may be asked to produce it along with you licence should you be stopped by the police.

You would also need to bring your certificate with you when you take any training towards your test.
