Bike Plus
'Bike Plus' is a post test scheme that aims to help newly qualified, and inexperienced bikers stay safer when they take to the road.
The scheme was launched in January 2005, and is the first of its kind in England to offer a subsidised post test development course for bikers’. Like the Driving Standards Agency's (DSA) Pass Plus for drivers, ‘Bike Plus’ offers post-test guidance to people who have passed their bike test, or those who are returning to riding after an absence.
Qualified instructors work with bikers, on a maximum 2:1 ratio, to develop their riding skills and improve their awareness of potential hazards on the road.
So what to do next
First step is to call Shires and arrange your Bike Plus day.
Bike Plus is done on your own motorcycle so on arrival at Shires you will need the following.
  • Both parts of your driving licence.
  • Your bike must be in road legal condition including tyres, lights, indicators etc.
  • Bike must be displaying a current tax disk.

Without all the above we would not be able to take you out

  • A full tank of fuel and means to refill if needed (cash or cards).
  • We also recommend that you are a member of some sort of recovery company.
Shires recommend that you have a little riding experience on your own bike before the course, but this is not essential.

During the on-road training we will cover the following aspects of your riding

  • hazard awareness
  • forward planning
  • road positioning
  • overtaking
  • rural/urban riding
  • bends and cornering.
We at Shires have found that everyone who comes on this course has an excellent day , and all go away having learnt something.
To give you an idea of what to expect on a Bike plus day, one of out customers kindly wrote a diary of the days events
This includes from arriving at Shires, to the final feedback, including pictures from the day and a map of the route
